The Edge of the World

April 11th, 2007

Four views of the San Fernando Valley. Click on each photo to see a cool Quicktime VR that allows you to “be there.” They take a little while to load, and require Quicktime.

The Panorama City Mall was one of the first malls in the valley. The community was created after WWII by Henry J. Kaiser and at the time only allowed homesales to whites. The mall had both a Broadway department store and Montgomery Ward. Click on the photo to see what became of both.

Here’s a glimpse of LA Municipal Water land beginning where a community ends.

Remember that scene in Chinatown? Here stands the last orange grove in the San Fernando valley, dating from a time when the valley was all wheat fields, orange groves and farmers before aqueducts and cable cars. This small piece of history is on the Southeastern corner of the Cal State Northridge Campus.

A view from Porter Ranch, on the very edge of the valley as the sun sets.
