An upcoming documentary feature about the culture of urban sprawl, the politics of urban planning, the aesthetics of our built environment and the history of Western expansion

The housing crisis

October 24th, 2008

Things are happening in the housing market that will change how we deal with and grow with housing for the foreseeable future.  There are various “bubble blogs” on the web that have been predicting this state of affairs for a few years and generally what informs their predictions is precedent.  The documentary will explore some of this precedent and the progression of events that are happening day by day.

In brief, it is my view that the housing crisis currently underway has only just begun, that wave upon wave of foreclosure will shake the core of the world financial markets in ways we’ve only just seen a glimpse of. The growth of our economy has been entirely dependent on home building and urban expansion for a few decades.  As the 60 year old infrastructures of some of the first highly-government leveraged suburban developments begin to crumble and beg for money, piling up bond measures, the newly built subdivisions of the last 5 years are being completely abandoned.

The screenshot below is from Zip Realty.  I’m not sure what exactly is going on here, but it’s clear that all is not well in one particular subdivision of Canyon Country.
